In order to prevent the British from advancing up the Hudson river, in 1778 George Washington ordered for a great chain to be strewn out across the river at West Point. The chain was strategically placed between Constitution Island and West Point where the river swerves in an S form making navigation difficult and ships vulnerable. Fearrful of losing vessels to the chain, the British were forced to move south.
